Throughout the world, the portable lifestyle of nomads impacted on the art and creativity of decorative woven bags. Tribal bags were socialy important, the wealth and status of a family was judged by the number and quality of bags.

Nomads, depending economically and physically on their herds of animals had to move from place to place each season to find good grazing. Sheeps and goats provided both food, drink and wool for clothes, tribal bags, bands, trappings, rugs, wall hangings, furnishings. For transport, they relied primarily on horses and camels, using tribal bags in many sizes to be slung over pack animals'. This portable lifestyle impacted on the art and creativity of decorative woven bags, trappings and bands and other items to embellish their portable homes. Their animals were the nomad's greatest asset, and they were treated accordingly. Many items of animal trappings and bags were woven for a girl's dowry, the wealth and status of a family was judged by the number and quality of the bags to store clothing, bedding and domestic items. There are various shapes of tribal bags and types of weavings reflecting the collective memory of the different nomadic groups that weave them, each tribe having its own style varying from country to country and region to region. In the Northwestern Iran, special storage bags made are called mafrash, were also used by Quasqai and Shahsavan tribes as furniture in their daily nomadic life. In Turkey were woven cotton bags with wool embroideries for seeds, saddle bags for horses or donkeys in cotton or wool and also amazing double wool bags as a poncho worn by Kurdish people !
